Most DPC members still carry a high-deductible health plan or other catastrophic coverage for hospitalizations, surgeries, and emergencies. DPC handles the day-to-day — primary care, prevention, sick visits, chronic management — while insurance handles the big stuff.
Primary Care + Functional Medicine

Lightning VIP offers both, but they are not interchangeable. The distinction matters because some patients need standard medical care first, some need deeper root-cause work later, and some may need both at different points in their care.
Primary Care
Primary care focuses on diagnosis, treatment, medication management, preventive care, routine screenings, urgent concerns, chronic condition support, and keeping patients medically safe and monitored.
Functional Medicine
Functional medicine is a separate root-cause approach. It goes deeper into patterns involving hormones, metabolism, gut health, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, stress, and long-term optimization.
Functional medicine does not replace primary care. These services are separate and are booked and billed separately. The goal is not to push everyone into the deepest service. The goal is to help you get the right level of care for what is actually going on.

Do I still need health insurance if I have DPC?
Yes — for almost all patients, we strongly recommend keeping some form of catastrophic or high-deductible health insurance alongside your DPC membership. DPC covers your day-to-day primary care, but it does not cover hospitalizations, surgeries, ER visits, advanced imaging, or specialist care.
The most common pairing is a high-deductible health plan for emergencies plus a DPC membership for everyday care.
What is the difference between Essential and All-Inclusive?
Essential ($89/mo) includes direct provider access, the member text line, prescription management, care coordination, and an annual physical. Individual visits are charged at $50 video or $95 in-office.
All-Inclusive ($159/mo) includes everything Essential does plus video visits at no charge, with in-office visits at a reduced $50 flat fee.
How is this different from traditional primary care?
Traditional primary care is built around insurance reimbursement. DPC removes insurance billing from the primary care relationship, which means longer appointments, direct provider access, and fewer patients per provider.
What about labs, imaging, and prescriptions?
Labs and imaging are typically ordered through your insurance when possible or at discounted cash-pay rates when insurance does not apply. Prescriptions are sent to whichever pharmacy you prefer and billed through your insurance or pharmacy discount program.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
For sick visits and urgent concerns, same- or next-day access is typical for both membership tiers. For routine visits and annual physicals, scheduling is generally within the same week.
Can I switch between membership tiers later?
Yes. If your needs change, you can upgrade from Essential to All-Inclusive or downgrade if your usage decreases. Membership changes are processed for the following billing cycle.
What if I need a specialist or hospital care?
Your provider will coordinate referrals to specialists, manage communication, review specialist findings, and help integrate specialist recommendations back into your overall care. Hospital and specialist care itself is billed separately.
Is there a commitment or contract?
DPC memberships are month-to-month with no long-term contract. You can cancel anytime. Before enrollment, we recommend starting with a complimentary call with the Patient Care Coordinator so the fit and next step are clear.
